As a member of the Student Center team, student employees interact daily with students, staff, faculty, alumni and guests of the university. As the front line of our staff, you have the ability to leave a positive, lasting impression on our patrons. In coordination with Georgia State’s College to Career program, which is designed to improve students’ career readiness, employment with the Student Center helps students acquire, develop and sharpen competency in the areas identified by employers as the most sought-after skills. Through a well-developed training model (Focus on Leadership and Meaningful Employment (F.L.A.M.E), we assist the university’s effort to get students to identify, reflect upon and document the career competencies they are already learning to better equip students to succeed after graduation.
Many exciting opportunities for student employment are offered by the Student Center. Resources for our student employees and position descriptions for each position can be found on the left-hand rail below. Several leadership roles exist for the various areas of the Student Center but usually require tenure before applying. Focus on Leadership and Meaningful Employment (F.L.A.M.E.)
In coordination with Georgia State University’s College to Career program, which is designed to improve students’ career readiness, student employment at Georgia State is designed to help students acquire, develop, and sharpen competency in the areas identified by employers as the most sought-after skills. They include: Career & Self-Development, Critical Thinking, Communication, Equity & Inclusion, Leadership, Professionalism, Teamwork and Technology.
An overview of the F.L.A.M.E. program is available by clicking on the image below.
All new student employees will complete a self-assessment of their work-related attitudes, behaviors and skills in these competencies via PIN within the first 4 weeks of employment. In March of each year, all student employees will submit an assessment of their competencies and their supervisor will submit an assessment of the student’s competencies in April so that a meeting can be held to provide feedback on how to increase mastery of each competency. The assessment ratings are not used to determine continued employment or raises, but to help students develop the skills that potential employers are looking for. The professional development requirements for Student Center and Student Life employees focus on two components.
- Each Fall and Spring, a student must select one in-person lecture/training or LinkedIn Learning workshop from these options to develop one of the competencies listed above. A written reflection will be submitted by the student via PIN (by Nov. 15 for Fall and March 28 for Spring) answering the following questions.
- Did this lecture/training/workshop enhance your knowledge or skills in the selected competency? If yes, how? If no, why not?
- Did this lecture/training/workshop enhance your knowledge or skills in any of the other competencies? If yes, how? If no, why not?
- How will you incorporate what you learned into your role with the Student Center, your academic endeavors or your career plans after college?
- Students will be paid for 30 minutes for submitting the reflection and for up to 2 hours for attending the lecture/training/workshop. A College to Career Professional Development Verification form must be signed by the speaker or a representative of the office hosting the lecture/ workshop/training or a LinkedIn Learning certificate of completion submitted to the supervisor to receive compensation.
- At the end of each year of employment at the Student Center, student employees are recommended to meet with their college or school’s career services office to have their resume or cover letter reviewed. If they do get a critique, proof of the review should be provided to your supervisor. The following pages contain resources to strengthen your skills in any of the career competencies. For LinkedIn Learning courses go to https://www.linkedin.com/learning, select “sign in with organization account” and use your GSU ID and password and search for the topics.
You Can Expect Your Supervisor to:
- Provide a welcoming environment – we want you to feel a part of the team and comfortable asking questions and sharing your ideas.
- Be prepared – our department reflects our commitment to you and to those for whom we provide services. We know that your success depends a great deal on giving you what you need to do a good job.
- Be supportive – we are here to provide guidance and answer questions and to provide feedback regarding your work. The more supportive we are, the more successful you will be.
- Be a role model – along with professionalism and enthusiasm, we will model our commitment to learning and continuous improvement.
- Be committed and strive for a productive and collaborative work environment that is both rewarding and enjoyable.

In addition to the annual recognition opportunities available through the Panther Cub and Tommy Young Outstanding Service Awards and the Carol Ann Golder Memorial Scholarship there are additional ways that our student employees are recognized. Each Fall and Spring Semester there is an opportunity for our graduating students to be featured on the Student Center's social media and the Visix Screens in the Student Center.
For National Student Employee Appreciation Week every April, all student employees have an opportunity to be featured on the Student Center's social media and the Visix Screens in the Student Center. A recognition event is also held during that week where the winners of the Panther Cub and Tommy Young Outstanding Service Award winners are announced.
