Gender & Sexuality Resource Room
About the Resource Room
The Gender and Sexuality Resource Room is an extension of CCI and focuses on providing services, resources and intentional support for students identifying as or connecting to LGBTQ+ and varying gender identities. Located in Student Center East, the Gender and Sexuality Resource Room is on the second floor with its entrance through the main lobby of Suite 206. The Resource Room provides services such as programming, workshops, organizational support and mentoring. The Resource Room welcomes all faculty, students and staff who would like to serve as allies for the LGBTQ+ and varying gender communities as well, or those with an interest in learning more.
Purpose Statement
The Resource Room supports student engagement by aligning their purpose with personal goals that will enhance students’ academic and career success by building a culture that fosters identity awareness, identity acceptance and support of all students from LGBTQ+ and varying gender identities.
Guiding Principles
Building a culture of care through:
- Access: Providing opportunities to gain necessary resources to promote identity acceptance, identity awareness, health and wellness to further personal, academic and career success.
- Innovation: Creating intentional programming, workshops and discussions that address the importance and integration of identity and inclusion to ensure student success and community building.
- Inclusion: Promoting equitable learning environments that address the needs for intersecting identities within the LGBTQ+ community as well as allies.
Core Values
- Acceptance: The Resource Room is devoted to accepting all identities within the LGBTQ+ community and will hold allies of this community to the same standards. Through acceptance and understanding of varying sexuality and gender identities students are meant to find a sense of belonging within the Georgia State community.
- Diversity: Students who are LGBTQ+ identified are not bound by their sexuality and gender identities and often have varying ethnicities, religions and abilities that shape their world view and perspective of life. In order to help ensure we are meeting the needs of the Georgia State community, it is important to acknowledge diversity and nuances within this community to ensure personal, academic and career success.
- Authenticity: Providing spaces for students to be their most authentic self is necessary for creating a welcoming learning environment, building trust and developing healthy relationships. The Resource Room is a space for students to be their most true and expressive selves while fostering their growth and development as global citizens.
- Community: In order to create growth, cultural competence and impactful experiences that lead to student success, community building among students is necessary. Through programming, workshops and discussions, the Resource Room collaborates with stakeholders across the university to create opportunities that build community and supports the success of students who engage in initiatives.
- Leadership: Avenues for leadership development are created for students through acceptance, diversity, authenticity and community building. In partnership with other university departments and offices, various learning skills will be presented to foster personal, academic and career success among all students.
Library
CCI's library resources have been collected to strengthen students’ knowledge around a variety of beliefs, values and experiences of diverse cultural identities and to enhance the skills they will need to work and live as global citizens and leaders in society. CCI has a growing collection of resources focusing on an array of cultural communities, culturally responsive teaching and diversity workshops.
A Resource for Students:
CCI's growing library is full of reference books, novels, magazines and videos on different cultural communities around the world. The collection consists of African American, Asian, Hispanic or Latino, LGBTQ+, Middle Eastern and Native American culture and history. The checkout process is simple, requiring just your Panther ID card. However, the library is conducive to readers who like to sit down, browse or relax.
A Resource for Faculty:
Faculty who are looking for unique classroom activities can encourage their students to attend Conversations on Contemporary Social Concerns and book discussion events. Faculty can promote cross-cultural experiences by reserving books, articles and videos that can be accessed by their students. These are great ways to facilitate learning and discussion outside the classroom.
